< Our Brief History >
Shogi (Japanese chess "将棋") is a kind of chess like games. There are many kinds of chess like games in the world, but Shogi is the most interesting one because of its sophisticated rule (we believe). Japanese Shogi lovers, who wish to popularize Shogi in the world, gathered to establish the "ISPS (International Shogi Popularization Society)" in May 1995. Later ISPS became a Non Profit Organization getting a legal personality in October 2000.
The objective of ISPS is to popularize Shogi in the world and thus to promote Japan's friendly relations with other countries. ISPS is doing various activities to spread Shogi in many countries. One of our goals is to hold an International Shogi Olympic Game regularly. We have done and are doing following activities.
- gathering and providing informations on the promotion of Shogi outside of Japan
- enhancing network of foreign Shogi players
- making textbooks of Shogi in foreign languages
- assisting foreign people to learn Shogi etc.

Sep. 2002 Send Shogi Instructor for Sweden National Team
Feb. 2003 First Shogi Championship Game of elementary school pupils, Yokohama-Shanghai (at Yokohama)
Aug. 2003 Third Shogi Championship Game of elementary school pupils, Tokyo-Beijing was suspended by SARS. Shogi Championship Game of rooting for Beijing with only Japanese pupils were opened.
Aug. 2003 Two week study tour for Ukraine and Russia by our two directors.
Nov. 2003 4 day tour to Seoul in Korea for cultural exchange between Japanese shogi and Korean shogi.
Jan-Feb 2004 Sending two Japanese coachers in order to develop local shogi coachers in Seoul.
Apr.-Sep. 2004 Sending one Japanese coacher to Sankt. Peterburg to teach shogi mainly to a local Japanese language school.
